Campus Dining Today Spring 2021 - 8

LEADERSHIP

agenda

By the time this edition of Campus Dining Today® is published, spring will
be upon us. For me, living in North Dakota and enduring another winter
on the northern prairie, spring is about renewal and regeneration of the
barren North Dakota landscape. Although this year, spring brings much
more. It brings hope that the end of the pandemic is near; hope people
get vaccinated; hope we can go back to a pre-pandemic " normal, " and
hope we can do the things we enjoy doing without the restrictions
of COVID-19. Leaders at the University of North Dakota are engaged
in creating reconstitution plans, determining what a post-pandemic
" normal " will look like for the students when they return in the fall, and
there is hope operations will be back to normal.

It is also a time of renewal for NACUFS. The NACUFS CEO search task
force was charged with interviewing and referring the top candidates to
the board of trustees for interviews and final selection. I am pleased to
announce Robert Nelson, CAE, as the next NACUFS CEO. Robert comes
to NACUFS with a wealth of experience in leading non-profits and trade
associations. His previous experience at the National Coffee Association
and the Florida Restaurant Association will serve him well as he takes on
the role of CEO. Finding the right person to fill the role of CEO is critical
for the success of NACUFS. The association has a successful and storied
past, but as we enter the post-pandemic period where it may take
years for institutional budgets to recover, institutions will need to justify
expenditures such as association memberships. Having strong leadership
at the helm and providing exceptional membership value will aid in that
justification.
The Learning Committee has wrapped up its work on the SelfAssessment Tool and the related resources tied to the NACUFS
Collegiate Dining Body of Knowledge™ (Body of Knowledge). Members
will soon be able to utilize this tool to assess their skills in correlation
to the Body of Knowledge and identify resources that will help them
close the gap on deficiencies. The Learning Committee will continue to
develop and align all learning opportunities with the Body of Knowledge.
If there is a silver lining of the pandemic, it is the speed by which
we all adapted to technology that has changed the way we learn,
socialize, work, and communicate. The pandemic may have advanced
the development and acceptance of technology by nearly a decade.
The Engaging People Workshop Online is a prime example of this
acceptance. Offered in November and December as an online program,
