failed to pursue digital technology out of fear they would
lose business. They went from having 120,000 employees
at their peak to 5,000 globally in 2019.
" When we lose track of the destination, we can end up like
Kodak, " he said.
Finally, the fifth principle is " Demonstrate the Courage to
Lead. " Here, it's vital to acknowledge that the first four
principles already require substantial courage, Dunsmoor
said.
" Planting a flag in the ground and saying 'we may never
get there'-courageous. Being willing to turn your back to
someone and say, 'I trust you not to stab me in it,' that's
courageous. Being able to admit someone else might be
better at something than you are, that's courageous. Also,
stepping into the unknown is courageous, " he explained.
While all those things require courage, it is the narrative
around courage that is the focus of the last principle.
" We like to think of someone as a brave person-that it's an
attribute you possess or you don't-when in reality it's not
like that at all, " he said. " It's not whether you have it or you
don't. It's about how you find it when you need it. "
Dunsmoor asked who in the audience would jump out of an
airplane with just a parachute. A handful of people raised
their hands.
" A decent amount of crazy people, " he noted. " Identify
them at your tables. "
He then added, " I bet a not-insignificant cross section
of that group would not have that same level of courage
and excitement when it comes to having an intimate
conversation with their partner, or giving tough feedback
to a coworker or someone they love, or asking their boss
for a raise. That is a different kind of courage. So, we can't
pretend that courage is one thing. "
Finding courage when we need it requires the first two
principles as a safety net, he explained. Having a just
cause and a trusting team helps us take the meaningful
risks necessary to accomplish whatever we set out to.
One example of courageous leadership he cited was
when CvS became the first major retail pharmacy
chain to discontinue tobacco sales-not because it was
a profitable decision, but because of their value for
promoting health. Other pharmacies soon followed suit.
In response to a question from the audience about what
the future of food is, Dunsmoor said that although he
was " wildly unqualified " to answer, he believed that
members of the audience and the broader industry are
the ones who get to decide that future.
" We are not subject to the future; we are the creators, "
he said. " You have the scope and scale and influence to
effect change. "
Dunsmoor added that one trend he has observed as
an industry outsider is moving toward plant-based and
more environmentally conscious food options.
" There is no long-term if we don't have a long-term
home, right? " Dunsmoor said. " But also, you all get to
inspire the next generation who figure out what that
looks like. ... We're hiring and training the people who
are going to make the future. "
