everyone is born with a different genetic
setpoint for happiness, Blankson said meaning
some people are born happier than others. The
good news is that genetics are not the end of
the story.
" It turns out that everyone in this room can raise
the baseline of happiness by practicing-by
working on it, " Blankson said. " Happiness is not a
just a feeling, it's a work ethic. "
By practicing gratitude, we are retraining the
neural pathways in our brain.
" This is why Martin Seligman, the father of
positive psychology, found gratitude to be the
fastest way to trump your genes, " Blankson said.
Also backed by neuroscience, acts of kindness
improve mood and happiness by engaging our
mirror neurons, which cause our brain to mirror
what another person is feeling.

" You've heard these before, " Blankson said-but
you may not have heard the science that backs
them up.
" Journaling creates a trajectory of meaning in
your life, " she explained.
Blankson described a study in which individuals
suffering from chronic pain were tasked with
journaling for two minutes per day for 21 days.
After six weeks, they reported being able to
lower their pain medication by 50 percent.
" This is that mind-body connection that is very
powerful and transformative, " Blankson said.
The gratitude practice Blankson recommended
is to write down three different things you're
grateful for every day for 21 days.
