As I transition to past chairman of this great association, I want to acknowledge the
hard work that the board undertook this year to keep NACUFS moving in a positive
direction to stay current. The board addressed a wide range of topics, which resulted
in lots of good dialog. I am proud of the board for providing the leadership that is
right for the times we are in and the direction NACUFS is heading.

Whenever an association carries out changes to its bylaws that lead to a change in
culture, it brings forth a sea of emotion and uncertainty for a period of time. I wish
to recognize these emotions and the uncertainty this may have caused. I appreciate
the robust conversations that have been voiced these past few months as the board
communicated the proposed changes with the membership. I firmly believe they
will ensure NACUFS remains relevant in the future. Just as our dining programs have
changed over the years to meet our student guests' needs, so too must NACUFS
change to better meet the needs of its members.
It was great to see so many of you in Baltimore, and I am glad we had a robust
attendance at our Bylaws Town Hall. Opportunities like this are crucial to maintaining
NACUFS as an organization that truly values its members' opinions - and I was glad
to hear your thoughts as we prepared for the election.
NACUFS continues to explore and evaluate the value it brings to its membership and
looks for ways it can improve. An example is the recent survey about learning that
you have been asked to complete. The results will inform NACUFS on how we can
deliver stronger education in the future that fits your needs as a busy professional.
The conference team put together a fantastic program with lots of great educational
opportunities covering a variety of trending topics, and I'm so glad so many of you
were able to join me and learn from our keynote speakers and our peers. The opening
general session- " The Infinite Game " -was especially appealing to me, both from the
director viewpoint, as well as from the viewpoint of a leader in this association.
Watching the regional Culinary Challenge winning chefs go head-to-head in
competition was also especially exciting for me. I know what they went through
to undertake the challenge - the stress of those final practice sessions, packing
and shipping everything to Baltimore, and then preparing that infamous cart, that
lifeline to something resembling normal within your roughly 8-by-8-foot station. I
congratulate all the competitors! You are all winners for volunteering to compete, and
I wish you Happy Cooking!
NACUFS has accomplished a lot of change over the past decade or so, and I'm sure
will continue to do so way beyond the end of my time as chairman. Just as I trusted
the leadership of the past and you have trusted the leadership of today, I will trust
the leadership of tomorrow. I look forward to seeing you all in Louisville next year.
