offers a weekly specialty flavor, as well as seasonal
and celebratory flavors and specials throughout
the year. Pairing with cold options, they offer 12
different toppings and a variety of cookies to
complete a sweet stop at The Scoop. They also
serve products in 100 percent compostable bowls
and utensils.
The goal when designing The Scoop was to
create a space that felt modern, clean, unique and
vibrant that students would feel excited to have as
a part of their dining program.
" We looked at our open space as a blank
canvas to construct a concept that distributed
an exciting product efficiently while enhancing
and diversifying our students' experience, "
Thompson said. " The Scoop is our first and only
dessert concept, grabbing students' attention
with purposefully displayed cones, cookies and a
variety of colorful toppings and inviting students
in with our neon sign, 3D sprinkle wall, and
cohesive pink seating options. "
A dessert concept was originally suggested by
UNC's Student Dining Board, a group made up
of students involved around campus. This group
meets weekly with CDS' culinary team and
managers to discuss the program.
" We are proud to say The Scoop is a successful
addition to our program in multiple ways due to
our students, the atmosphere we crafted, and our
partnership with a well-known and loved local farm, "
Thompson said. " Student responses are so positive
that we recently began selling merchandise! "
The Scoop inclusively caters to students with
various dietary preferences. Three creative, eyecatching,
and informative panel menus include meal
exchange options, happy hours specials, flavors,
toppings and more. When it comes to their various
ice cream combinations, students can see a clear
breakdown of what is included with each. CDS uses
printed signage, as well as social media, to promote
seasonal and weekly specials. All printed and digital
collateral used for The Scoop is designed using the
same color scheme and fonts to create a cohesive
storefront and attract students.
By including allergen statements, caloric information
for all products, a daily value statement, and calorie
ranges for combo options, The Scoop menu leaves
students with no unanswered questions. Seasonal
and specialty flavor signage incorporates this
information, as well. To keep the space and food
safe, they keep track of food temperatures and
follow food safety guidelines.
