Description of Project: The National Gateway Clearance
Initiative is an improvement program to achieve a minimum of 21 feet of vertical clearance along CSX Transportation Inc’s (CSX) rail corridor so that double-stacked intermodal railcars can be transported between mid-Atlantic
states and their ports to midwest markets

Photo 1. This aerial photo of the Pinkerton Tunnel daylighting
project located in Somerset County, Penn., (USA) shows the
south slope cut development for placement of a run-around
track, once completed rail traffic will be moved outside the tunnel to the new alignment then the Pinkerton Tunnel will be retreat excavated. Note the Western Maryland Railway low bridge
over the Casselman River in the lower left and the high bridge
in the upper center of the photo which is the Great Allegheny
Passage Trail for hiking and biking 141 miles from Homestead,
PA (near Pittsburgh) to Cumberland, Md., then joins the C&O
Towpath creating a continuous trail 325 miles long to Washington, D.C. The old Pinkerton Tunnel on the Great Allegheny
Passage Trail runs under the south slope and has been closed
for years needing repairs. Bicyclists currently use a bypass trail
instead of through the Pinkerton Horn.
