The following is from minutes of a
meeting in Chicago on December 11,
1913: (Edited by RBH for clarity)
The practice of transporting blasting caps and electric blasting caps
on the same vehicle with other explosives was discussed. Discussion
pointed out that the Interstate Commerce Commission has prohibited it.
Congested trafﬁc and the automobile
make it a dangerous practice and we
recognize we are violating the law and
common sense. Railroads condemn
the practice and won’t accept dynamite and caps in the same shipment.
Mr. Rood (Independent Powder Company of Missouri) said “we run about
six wagons and they cover the whole
Joplin District, for instance, every day.
We have done that for eleven years
and we have caps on every wagon all
the time. We have never had any kind
of accident.”
There were examples given by Mr.
Jones (Cameron Powder Company).
“We had a case where an interurban
car ran into our powder wagon on
which we had several thousand caps

and several thousand pounds of powder and dynamite. It smashed the wagon all to pieces, completely destroyed
about 700 pounds of dynamite, exploded all the caps, killed one mule
and sent the driver to the hospital for
about a month. A little over a year ago
we had an accident at Independence,
Ohio which killed the man, killed the
horse, threw the explosive all over
creation, exploded some of them and
didn’t explode the dynamite.”
