Table 2. Blast design parameters for typical high and low cover blasts.

The Vernal mine operated for many years with pit
widths averaging 100.65 m (330 ft) wide with an overall
cast-to-final (overburden placed by explosives in its final
location) that was ~7% of the total overburden moved annually. It was however easily recognized with a benefit of
~15% for a single blast. A new engineer to the operation
recognized the potential benefits of casting and began
studying the parameters of cast blasting and implementing
them into the mine plan.
The first change made was adjusting pit widths from
100.65 m (330 ft) to 73.2 m (240 ft) which was as narrow
as the psyche of the operators would allow. Instantly the
cast-to-final of a single blast went from 15% to 20%. A 7%
average cast increase was a huge success for the low cover
bench but was simply overwhelmed by the total overburden moved, making the cast-to-final for the year ~10%, only
30

a 3% increase when considering both the 21.4 m (70 ft)
high cover and the 14.0 m (40 ft) low cover benches combined.
The next major change to be made was shooting a higher bench. Engineering was able to create an opportunity to
test shoot both the high cover and the low cover together.
The bench height was approximately 30.5 m (100 ft), pit
width 73.2 m (240 ft), 11 rows, 6.7 m x 6.7 m (22 ft x 22
ft) burden and spacing , 222 mm (8 ¾ in) diameter vertical
holes with a PF = 0.74 kg/m3 (1.25 lb/BCY). These shots
were a success and averaged a 28% cast-to-final benefit. It
was then obvious that shooting both benches together for
the entire year could easily change the cast-to-final from
10% to at least 28%.
The 30.5 m (100 ft) bench height tests were a great
learning opportunity. It was discovered that 30.5m (100
