The blast design for the high
cover blast given in table 2 and
figure 4 illustrates the DMC modeling of the high cover blasting
before the conversion to cast blasting. Note, in figure 4, that blastinginduced velocity is displayed and
that the velocity of the rock mass
is between 5 and 10 m/s (16.4 and
32.8 ft/s). Assuming a 45 degree
cast line (ISEE Blasters’ Handbook)
from the toe of the blast, the castto-final is ~18.9%. This was for a
typical high cover blast of a 21.35
m (70 ft) high bench, 73.2 m (240
ft) wide.
The blast design for the low
cover blast is also given in table 2
and figure 5 illustrates the DMC
modeling for the low cover blast.
Figure 5 shows the geologic strata
typically present in the low cover
blast.The cast-to-final is ~20%. This
was for a typical low cover blast
with a 12.2 m (40 ft) high bench
that was 73.2 m (240 ft) wide.
These two blast simulations
closely predict typical behavior
of the low and high cover blasts.
The DMC models were generated
to represent the typical high and
low cover blasts. The DMC model profiles were then overlaid in
