The Journal of Explosives Engineering - March/April 2013 - 37
Simplot has been able break prior cast records of single
shot blast efficiency from 37% cast-to-final with pyrotechnic detonators to 44% cast-to-final with electronic detonators. Because of these test shots, Simplot is now in the
conversion process of changing all of the blasting delays
to electronic and phasing out the pyrotechnic delays. Electronics detonators will definitely be a strong part of Simplot’s future blasting designs helping them continue to exceed industry expectations.

About the Authors
Cassidy McAllister began his mining engineer career with Simplot
Phosphates in 1999 while working on his mining engineering studies at the University of Utah earning his degree in 2003. His passion
of mine optimization has led him into a position where he is now
managing both the short range and long range mine planning as
well as the blasting crew.
Dale S. Preece is a Senior Research Fellow and Manager of Blasting
Applications Americas/EMEA at the Orica research center in Watkins, CO. He has been involved in a variety of explosives research
since 1986, holds a patent for body armor and is the author of the
DMC computer codes used for predicting both 2D and 3D blastinginduced rock movement.
Steven P. Case has worked in the explosives industry as a technical
representative for over thirty years. He worked for Pacific Powder
Company from 1977 through 1984. From 1985 – 2006, he worked
for the Atlas Powder Company / ICI Explosives / Orica USA . Currently, Steve is the senior technical representative for Intermountain
West Energy / Orica USA.
This article was presented by the authors at ISEE’s 38th Annual
Conference on Explosives and Blasting Technique in February,
2012 in Nashville, TN. This paper has been updated from its
