2015 Poised to be
Strong Year for

Global
Leasing

By James Careless

2014 was a good year for aviation's global leasing industry. 2015 could be even better - but
only if the rising U.S. dollar, falling oil prices and the airlines' growing cash reserves don't
cut into demand for aircraft leases.

What Made 2014 Good
A number of factors combined to make 2014 "a very robust year" for the global aviation
leasing industry, said David Yu, managing director of Inception Aviation Holdings. "It was a
very active time for aircraft leasing, and there was considerable amount of financing availability across the market," added Mark Fabian, SVP of GA Telesis' Asset Transaction Group.
What led to the good times? "Of particular note ... the [aircraft manufacturing] industry had
its first positive year-over-year performance in terms of new jet unit deliveries since 2008,"
said Mike Kahmann, group head and managing director of CIT Business Aircraft Finances.
Aircraft passenger travel also increased in 2014, giving air carriers the confidence to order
and lease additional aircraft. IATA says both international and domestic passenger travel
were up 5.3 percent in September 2014, compared to the year before. The biggest growth
in international travel was in the Middle East, with an increase of 15.8 percent. Meanwhile,
India topped the domestic growth market, with 26.3 percent growth over the same period
a year ago.
2014 also saw tremendous action in aviation leasing's sales and leaseback (SLB) sector, as
airlines took advantage of unprecedented demand from traditional and emerging lessors for
assets. "This was prompted by a generally favorable operating environment despite ongoing global economic and political challenges that affected some regions more than others,"
said Mamoun Kuzbari, managing director of Novus Aviation Capital (Novus). "Nonetheless,
the robustness of the industry and history of good investment returns from the asset class
continued to encourage new entrants, which placed downward pressure on lease rates and
