And finally, our members as sponsors and
exhibitors have been incredibly generous,
which has allowed us to use our resources to
markedly increase member benefits without
increasing membership dues.
Let's also not forget that ISTAT also
has a charitable foundation. The ISTAT
Foundation has a very dedicated group of
trustees and other member volunteers who
spend an incredible amount of time running
scholarship, internship, grant, humanitarian, and educational efforts. The foundation
has also grown their own resources; while
looking to ISTAT for a considerable contribution, the ISTAT Foundation has been able
to enhance their own programs by soliciting
additional support.
Jetrader: What have you learned from
your experience on the ISTAT board?
Marc S. Allinson:
A) Our board members get better information than years ago. Treasurer, Doug
Runte has upgraded the statistics the
board tracks and the presentation of
financial information.
B) We used to debate every subject endlessly and you only have a limited
amount of time in a meeting and a
limited number of meetings. My predecessor Jep Thornton transitioned us to
a committee structure, which has made
us so much more efficient.
C) A greater percentage of international
members on the board has given us a
difference in perspective on issues and
the friendly debate is healthy.
Jetrader: What are your goals for your
tenure as president?
Marc S. Allinson: Ha! I've been asked
quite a lot what I want my legacy to be
and my gut reaction is, "He didn't f$%k it
up!" There are really a few areas I'd like to
address. First, more use of real time communication with the membership through social
media channels. I am not always convinced
the board has their hands around what our
members want. We do ask questions at conferences and have the occasional surveys,
but the results can be open to interpretation. Let's give our members more chance to
comment about what they like and don't like
about our events and about the society as
a whole. We can have a great board but we
have to constantly improve our offerings or
we will cease to be relevant to our members.
