787-9 returns from its impressive demo flight.

Finishing touch for a VIP A319CJ.

68,000- to 72,000-pound thrust Rolls-Royce
Trent 7000 engine, a derivative engine
largely based on the architecture of the
future Trent 1000-TEN engine that will
eventually become the standard Rolls-Royce
engine for the Boeing 787 family. AirAsiaX's
Tony Fernandes called the A330neo a killer
aircraft, but according to Flight Daily News,
expressed his disappointment in not having an engine choice, specifically of the
General Electric GEnx.
It is interesting to note that the cooperation between Rolls-Royce and Airbus
is now very intense while GE seems to be
more committed to power the latest Boeing
products. With the need for an integrated
airframe/engine design for future aircraft
designs with open-rotor engines, is this
a sign of things to come? Investors and
financiers are eager to see what impact
the A330neo will have on used market values of the A330ceo, as well as future new
price levels of unsold production slots for
this type as well as the 787. With both the

Line of dreamers: Spectators admire the new 787-9.

Read all about it: No way to avoid the
show daily.

A350 and the 787 mainly aimed at the very
long-haul markets, it will be interesting to
see how the A330neo will perform as the
only design optimized for the medium-haul
segment until the 787-10 enters the market.
With the help of some "plastic surgery,"
will the old beauty queen be able to challenge its two much younger contenders?
Time will tell.
Outside of the big-league, Bombardier
scored much-needed orders for the CSeries,
coming from Zheijang Loong, Baltic, Falcon
and Petra Airlines, lessor Falko and a few
undisclosed customers. Air Mandalay ordered
six MRJ-90s. Champagne was flowing in the
ATR chalet with their-by turboprop standards-mega-orders from Nordic Aviation
Capital. On the engine side, CFMI was clearly
pleased to announce they had won two major
campaigns for their LEAP engine-American
Airlines and Easyjet. After the setback of the
competing Pratt & Whitney PW1000G GTF
engine on the CSeries, will the market move
toward the CFMI LEAP-1? As a reportedly

"uncontained" failure, the authorities will
certainly take a serious look at the new Pratt
& Whitney engine.
In conclusion, 2014 was an excellent
year in Farnborough thanks to a wellorganized show with generally pleasant
weather, interesting new aircraft, a new
product launch and significant new order
volume. Fans of the metal always benefit
from the fact that the organizers think
about them as well, with ample space to
watch the planes take off and land, good
facilities, and plenty of relatively affordable catering. Will the organizers of next
year's Paris Air Show be able to improve
on this event? While they can't control the
weather and traffic, maybe they should
allow for a little more room for the spectators to watch the airplanes and make sure
there are no large trucks parked directly in
front of the ISTAT Chalet and the professional photographers' enclosure!
For now, FIA 2014 organizers, thanks a
lot; it's been fun!
