...broadly speaking, from our perspective there's pretty balanced global
demand. For the first time in years, we're seeing economies grow pretty
much all around the globe. It's synchronized growth and provides
more stimulus for global air travel.
field, and we want to be able to have that
access when the markets are disrupted.
Jetrader: China continues to drive a
large portion of financing needs and
capabilities. Do you think that we're
reaching the end of the growth cycle
for that region?
TM: Again, it really comes back to
demand. China's economy may be slowing slightly, but its air travel continues to
grow at a very rapid rate. It has a rapidly
expanding middle class. The economy is
moving from manufacturing to services.
They're getting easier access to visas, and
people want to travel internationally. So all
that is continuing to support a very strong
growth, but it's also accompanied by the
Chinese financial sector, which has jumped
into aircraft financing in a very big way.
We now have, depending on who you talk
to, over 50 aircraft lessors, maybe that's
a little bit higher, but also, the big banks
are all playing a pretty significant role, not
only in financing in China, but outside of
China and going global, as well.
Jetrader: That said, what are your
thoughts on growth in China given the
possibility of escalating trade tensions
between the United States and China?
TM: At Boeing, we remain very focused
on the strong, long-term fundamentals
that take place in the aerospace industry. This is highlighted by the combined
strength of the passenger growth that I
just talked about, and it's very important
that we keep all of that in perspective
as we navigate through these global
trade discussions.
Jetrader: In the same region of the world,
Boeing enjoys continuing relationships
with Japanese global and regional banks
for financing, which is driven at least
partly by deliveries to Japanese airlines.
Can you talk a little bit about how you
envision Boeing's relationships evolving
and growing with Japan-based investors?
TM: Boeing has had a really long relationship with Japan and its financial community. They have been innovators and
leaders in aviation financing, and they have
a different number of unique participants.
You can look at the banks, the institutional
investors and the lessors, they've also got
the tax-enhanced JOL and JOLCO products.
