A Recap of the 2018 Farnborough International Airshow
Article and photos by DVB Bank's Bert van Leeuwen
The good times never seem to end in commercial aviation, and the 2018 Farnborough International Airshow certainly retained that
celebratory atmosphere. A positive mood, solid growth in passenger traffic, decent yield developments and an abundance of liquidity
all contributed to a strong rebound of airshow jet order volumes. Statistics provided by Flightglobal indicate the total of commercial
aircraft orders, LOIs and other commitments placed at Farnborough this year were almost double that of the previous edition in 2016
and actually close to the record volumes booked at the 2013 Paris Air Show. What may be even more remarkable is that almost all OEMs
reported strong order volumes.

Like most of northwestern Europe, the
U.K. enjoyed warm and dry weather during the days prior to this year's Airshow.
Whether it was tennis at Wimbledon, the
Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF
Fairford or - for the car enthusiasts -
the Goodwood Festival of Speed, nobody
needed a coat to stay warm, and when the
Airshow kicked off on Monday morning,
16 July, nothing had changed. Although
more clouds appeared in the sky throughout the day, temperatures remained pleasant and maybe it even got a little too
hot for some. During previous editions

of the Airshow, some manufacturers had
used private coaches to make the trip
from London and Farnborough and back.
Unfortunately, these buses often got stuck
in the heavy London morning traffic, so
getting to the Airshow for most meant a
train ride from London's Waterloo Station
to Farnborough Main station, followed by
a bus trip to the airfield.
As a pleasant surprise, the U.K. rail system could handle the stream of Airshow visitors fairly well this year. Air-conditioned,
dedicated, direct trains from Waterloo
covered the distance to Farnborough in

just over half an hour. As expected, getting from the station to the showgrounds
was a little more stressful. The characteristic British double-decker buses had
to fight their way through heavy traffic,
and occasionally the ride took a bit longer
than expected. The high temperatures
and lack of air conditioning made life a
little less pleasant on board the buses.
Once on the showgrounds, things were
OK again. During the previous edition
of the event, registration and security
checks took a long time, but the new
set up was a vast improvement. Some of
