The Importance of the
ISTAT Foundation and ISTAT
Members for Career Starters in
the Aviation Leasing Industry

As the eldest of six siblings and with
limited personal funding opportunities,
I would not have been able to complete
my MSc. in Air Transport Management at
Cranfield University without the assistance
of a scholarship from the ISTAT Foundation.
This scholarship, however, only marked the
beginning of an unbelievably great career
start for me.
The ISTAT Foundation encouraged me to
follow the ISTAT University 2.0 program,
which complemented my studies and helped
me to deepen my knowledge of the many
aspects of aircraft leasing. The educational
videos prepared by ISTAT members for the
ISTAT University students were especially
important for me. The information provided
by the industry experts helped me enormously with my courses at Cranfield and
shaped my professional future.
Also, the ISTAT Foundation invited me
to attend ISTAT conferences, which must
surely represent the largest knowledge
base a student with an interest in commercial aviation can possibly access. The
personal conversations with some of the
brightest minds in the leasing industry
afforded me a greater understanding and
served to further enhance my fascination
with the industry.
One key lesson I learned is that this business is not just about lowest costs; it is also
about relationships. Walking the extra mile
for your company and your customer can be
the tipping point for a successful deal and,
ultimately, the prosperity of your employer.
With that in mind, I met with the directors of Skytech-AIC, a U.K.-based ISTAT
member for many years, which led to a
successful cooperation during the development of my master's thesis and then
to an employment contract. Would I have
thought 18 months ago that I would now
be participating in the first open-market
sale and leaseback of the A220-300 and
assist with the marketing of used widebody
aircraft or be dining with senior executives
of airlines? I wouldn't have dreamed of it!
Today I can say that I am more than happy
to be part of Skytech-AIC, as the company's
philosophy behind its business relationships
and employee responsibility match the values in which I believe. As part of the analysis
and marketing team, I now return to ISTAT
conferences and often meet new scholarship
recipients who are in the same situation that
