region's economy.
The 2014 races would see an epic battle between two of the greatest pilots in
the history of the event, both flying topnotch planes in the "Unlimited" category.
Steve Hinton, 27-year-old, five-time reigning champion, flying a purple and green
P-51 Mustang named Voodoo, was challenged by 69-year-old former champion
Bill "Tiger" Destefani in a red-and-white
P-51 named Strega. Destefani, who owns
Strega, had retired in 2008 after winning
the Unlimited Gold and named Hinton as
his successor to fly the red-and-white racer.
Hinton won the next four races, but in
2013, moved to a competing team to fly
Voodoo. The move didn't stop Hinton from
winning again in 2014, beating Destefani's
Strega flown by anther pilot on that occasion. Destefani said he decided to return
this year because he thought he was still
the best pilot to challenge Hinton. "I pretty
much trained that boy over there [Hinton]
and what he doesn't know is that I didn't
teach him everything," he said.
Hinton and Destefani easily qualified
for the deciding Unlimited Gold Finals,
which promised to become an epic battle.
That battle indeed materialized but unfortunately a day earlier, when Destefani in
Strega, burned a piston in a photo finish with Hinton in the final qualifying heat before the championship. With
Strega out of the battle, Hinton took a
relatively easy win for the championship.
