In another crowd favorite, Mark PearmanWright from Airbus and Randy Tinseth from
Boeing Commercial Airplanes took to the
stage for a spirited large aircraft segment
discussion. Pearman-Wright addressed concern about production rates by explaining
how the manufacturer responded to supply
and demand by reducing the production
rate of the A330 from 10 to six per month
by the end of the year. He then passed the
baton off to his competitor, saying, "As a
manufacturer, you have to respond to the
market. Randy, I'm looking forward to what
you will say about the 777 because at the
moment, you guys need to respond."
Tinseth said Boeing is in a good place for
both single-aisle and widebody production.

"We're in a market where orders are interesting but deliveries are critical. And the
fact is that we've found a way with a smaller
backlog with a different set of customers
to deliver just as many airplanes as our
competition. And the question is: Will that
change? I don't think so," Tinseth said.
Other popular topics of discussion
included the slowdown of the Asian and
emerging markets, oil price and interest
rate forecasts, and the unpredictability of
the Middle Eastern market.
The popular lessors panel took a more
structured approach this year, as panelists
discussed the five essential pillars for lessor success. "We have to be able to articulate why [aviation] is a better investment,
and fundamentally, we have to get over the
issue that this is cyclical and that the ride

was up and there's a potential for a down
market," said Jeff Knittel, president, CIT
Transportation and International Finance.
Knittel said another key strength is the
ability to look for exposures and de-risk
the portfolio. "It's incumbent for the lessor
not to fall in love with the asset," he said.
Denis Kalscheur, chief executive officer,
Aviation Capital Group agreed, saying, "If
you're going to be in this business, you
have to actively manage the assets." Final

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy, chairman and chief
executive officer, Air Lease Corporation: "It
takes more than money to be successful in
this business."
