The other categories brought more close
races. Rick Vandam won the Jet Class in
"American Spirit." The Sport Class victory
went to Jeff LaVelle in "Race 39," and Chris
Rushing flew "Baron's Revenge" to victory
in the T-6 Class. The Biplane Class went
to Jeff Rose flying "Reno Rabbit," and the
increasingly popular Formula One class was
won by Lowell Slatter in "Fraed Naught."
Thom Richard had a narrow escape during
the start of a Formula One race. His engine
stalled, and another aircraft struck Thom's
plane from behind at around 60 mph, shearing off the canopy. Fortunately, Thom only
suffered a wrist injury. The entire sequence

While the other race classes made up for
the lack of excitement in the Unlimited
class, the crowds definitely had no reason
to complain as the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels
were back for one of their stunning demonstrations. Apart from a few technical
glitches, including #7 blowing a tire upon
landing on Wednesday, the Angels offered
a perfect demo, showing off their darkblue and yellow "Boeing" F/A-18 Hornets
against the bright blue sky over Reno's
Stead airfield.
For the past 25 years, another aviation
event takes place in Reno during the week
of the air races. This event is not as high
profile as the races, but it does have a clear
link to ISTAT members. This event is the
Annual Aircraft Investment Symposium,
organised by the ROAA, which does not
stand for "return on average assets" but
instead for "Reno Organisation of Aviation
Aficionados." Similarly, the name could
easily have been "RaceSTAT."
While ROAA is not as professionally
organized as ISTAT, Tailwind Capital's John
Culkin puts in a lot of effort every year to
make the event happen. We asked John to
explain a bit what ROAA is all about for all
ISTAT members.
"The ROAA was founded by persons who
all happened to be ISTAT members - really
more of a coincidence than a plan. The
Annual Meeting has always taken place in
September in conjunction with the Reno
Air Races. In sort of a tongue-in-cheek
way, we modelled our event after the
Conquistadores del Cielo, which is a "secret
club" of top aviation officials that meet in
an informal setting to discuss what is going
on in the business. Twenty-five years later,
many of us are relatively senior aviation
guys, as evidenced by several of the members flying their own jets in for the event.
