ISTAT EMEA in Prague

The 2018 installment of ISTAT EMEA, held
23-25 September, returned to Prague for
the third time - first in 2008 and again
in 2015 - for several days of networking,
meetings, education, discussion, presentations and fun, as delegates congregated
at the event's official host property, the
Hilton Prague.
On 23 September, delegates took advantage of several pre-event activities such
as a bohemian countryside excursion, a
Prague castle tour and an EFW freighter
conversion visit. And a large contingent
gathered that afternoon for the newly
christened "ISTAT Appraising  - An
Introduction" session, which takes the
place of the "Appraising 101" course and
offers prospective appraisers and interested industry parties an inside look at the
methodologies and practices of the ISTAT

Appraisers' Program. Later that afternoon,
the ISTAT NewGen Event kicked off. This
event allows early career ISTAT members a
chance to meet and hear from industry veterans, and this year featured a discussion
with Apollo Aviation's Robert Korn, president and co-founder, and Peter Blakeney,
vice president aircraft trading and ISTAT
board member. That evening, delegates
gathered for the welcome reception in the
Hilton Grand Ballroom for a few hours of
conversation, food and fellowship.

Starting the Sessions
The morning of 24 September saw event
proceedings begin with ISTAT President
Doug Runte, managing director and head
of aviation research, Deutsche Bank, welcoming delegates to the Congress Hall in
the Hilton Prague's lower level, noting

that attendance at ISTAT EMEA (more
than 1,600) now roughly equals ISTAT's
total membership in 2007, and that ISTAT
membership continues to climb, with the
society boasting more than 5,130 members
at present.
Sessions then began in earnest as Conor
McCarthy, managing director and project oversight, PlaneConsult, delivered
his keynote address, which detailed the
myriad changes in the industry during his
40-year career. "We have come through a
dramatic revolution in our industry," he
observed. "But, we've already grabbed
a lot of the low-hanging fruit. The next
steps for growth and evolution are going
to be more of a challenge. I've given up
trying to forecast what's going to happen, though. Instead, I'd advise anyone
to position yourself in the best possible
