It's a broad piece of advice, but there's
simply no way to predict what's around
the bend."
Immediately following the keynote, the
event's first panel discussion, the Investing
in European Aviation Panel, convened to
talk about the industry's overall health in
the region, with the topic of Brexit coming
up very early on. "To think that [Brexit] is
going to be a storm in a teacup, like Y2K, is
unwise thinking," said Lynn Guiney, head of
EMEA, Avolon. "This will have an enormous
impact on a generation, whether it's a hard
Brexit or not."
After a morning coffee break, the first
of two engine-related sessions convened,
with the GE Aviation and Rolls-Royce Panel
featuring presentations from each manufacturer. After the individual presentations,

the panelists discussed a range of topics, with both manufacturers mentioning
recent delays. "We can all agree that we
want the airplanes to move," noted Dominic
Horwood, chief customer officer - civil
large engines, Rolls-Royce. "And while the
supply chains are very tight, it's our job
to manage that and to manage risk for
everyone involved."
Next up, the morning's final session, the
Airline Panel, took the stage and quickly
began discussing fleet plans and needs.
Jay Hancock, managing director - fleet,
American Airlines, stated that "Without
exception, every choice is based on operating costs and economic conditions."
After a break for lunch at multiple
locations throughout the hotel, sessions
reconvened with the Regional Jets Panel
discussing the impact of Boeing and Airbus

on the market, as well as industry evolution
and a potential pilot shortage. "The pilot
shortage is an issue across the world," said
Rodrigo Silva e Souza, vice president of
marketing, Embraer Commercial Aviation,
"but it's being addressed in many different
ways - including academies and expanded
training opportunities, for example."
Immediately following, the Turbo Props
Panel discussed the challenges in securing financing, although Ross Mitchell,
vice president, business acquisition,
Bombardier, commented that "More and
more lessors are willing to finance turbo
props. They're a good asset and attract
a good lease rate." And Jim Murphy,
chief commercial officer, Nordic Aviation
Capital A/S, added that he predicts
"demand for turbo props will drastically
outpace supply in 2019."
