Strong attendance signals Asia’s growing influence
as a center of aircraft leasing and finance

With record-breaking attendance and participation at ISTAT Asia 2013, the event
conﬁrmed the importance of the region’s
inﬂuence in the global aviation market, as
well as the signiﬁcance of the annual meeting. More than 425 attendees participated
in the third-annual event held 12-14 May in
Tokyo, Japan, at the ANA Intercontinental.
”It was the largest aviation conference
to be held in Japan to date,” said David
Swan, chief operating ofﬁcer, SMBC Aviation
Capital.

Swan chaired the event with Steven
Townend, chief commercial ofﬁcer, BOC
Aviation, and committee members Peter
Huijbers, regional head of commercial,
Hong Kong Aviation Capital, and Anthony
(Tony) Diaz, president, CIT Aerospace,
Commercial Airlines.
The vast majority, about 70 percent,
of participants were ﬁrst-time attendees
of ISTAT Asia. “That was one of our main
goals this year because broadly we are
underrepresented in Asia. To have so many

attendees in a key market like Japan where
we never held an event before was very
signiﬁcant,” Swan said.
Japan has the longest history of
aviation in Asia, particularly in terms
of cross-border tax-based ﬁnancing. The
last decade has brought more aircraft
leasing to the country and airplane
manufacturing is another fast-growing
facet of the Japanese aviation industry.
There were many Japanese companies
in attendance who were delighted that
