Banks have even turned away from anything
older than 10 years; moreover, there may still
be some appetite for aircraft younger than
10 years, and it depends on the ﬁnancial
model/strategy of the bank.
Going forward, while ECAs and capital
markets are an add-on benefit in the

financing sector, banks with access to
institutional investors will also be playing
an active role in ﬁnancing new deliveries.

What the Future Holds
Forecasts are great as long as they
show an optimistic picture of the future.

It is a given that OEMs will be optimistic
in their forecasts when it comes to future
deliveries and demand for aircraft. We do
need these long-term forecasts to keep
our hopes alive that things will be back to
normal and what we are going through will
not last forever. However, these forecasts
will not hold true if airlines in Europe do
not respond to the changing market. LCCs
are quite capable of moulding themselves
and are able to respond to market dynamics more efﬁciently. The worry is whether
the regional and legacy carriers will show
the same ﬂexibility. Consolidations, cooperations, alliances, codeshares, ancillary
revenues, cost reduction measures, regular
reviews of routes and network strategy are
key to survival in a market that is unforgiving. Europe is on a long road to recovery,
and along the way those that cannot
reshape will disappear and the ones that
respond effectively will reap the beneﬁts.
When the market improves, the European
airline sector will be in far better shape
than ever before, with efﬁcient and wellstructured airlines resilient to short-term
ﬁnancial  crisis.
