An Airbus in uniform: A400M.

Russia’s hope for the commercial jet market.

Michael O’Leary, chief executive officer, Ryanair, and Ray Conner, executive vice GEnx shows the complexity of a modern jet engine.
president, The Boeing Company, president and chief executive officer, Boeing
Commercial Airplanes, celebrate the order of 175 of the current 737-800 design.

went to the Boeing chalet to buy 10 of
the 787-10Xs. On the same day, Lufthansa
firmed up a huge order for 70 A320/321neos
and 30 A320CEOs. Carnival came early for
Embraer with the launch orders for the E2
from Skywest (100 orders plus 100 options
for the E175-E2), ILFC (25 plus 25 of the
E190E2 and 25 plus 25 of the E195E2) and a
group of unannounced customers (65 of the
E2). It is interesting to note that Skywest
also has 100 of the competing Mitsubishi
MRJ90 planes on order.
On Tuesday, easyJet expressed its
intention to order 100 A320neos plus
30 A320CEOs as well, plus 100 options.
The new 787-10 received launch orders
from United (20), Singapore Airlines (30),
British Airways (12) and lessor ALC (30).
Korean added to the festivities in Seattle
by committing to five of the slow-selling
747-8Is plus six of the more popular
777-300ERs.
Wednesday became A350XWB-day with
Air France/KLM finalizing of an order for
25 A350-900s and 30 for the same type
from Singapore Airlines. Boeing could
celebrate 30 737MAX orders from Jeff
Knittel’s CIT Corp. Ryanair’s O’Leary had

travelled to the air show to ensure the
world they were taking no less than 175
of the current 737-800 design. O’Leary’s
announcement, as well as his answers to
the many questions asked by the journalist, probably can be best described by the
word “cabaret.” What became clear is that
O’Leary considers the 737-800s additional
seat capacity versus the A320 (at the right
price) as essential for his business model.
Ryanair hopes to be able to announce
an order for 200 of the 737MAX aircraft
possibly later this year.
Thursday the order flurr y calmed
down a little, giving Hong Kong Aviation
Capital the opportunity to steal the show
with a MoU for 40 A320neos plus 20
A321neos. Spirit Airlines finalized another
30 orders for the A321CEO. United finally
participated in the A350 after-party with
orders for 10 A350-1000s and conversions
of 25 -900 position to the larger -1000
as well.
On the turboprop front, the order for
30 ATR72s plus five ATR42s from Nordic
Leasing was the main eye-catcher. Enginewise, Pratt & Whitney’s PW1000G “GTF”
now seems to dominate the regional

jet market. In the single-aisle mainline
segment, CFM’s LEAP has the benefit
of being on both best-selling airframes
compared to the A320-only position for
the GTF. In the big engine segment, GE
and Rolls-Royce battle for 787 orders
and have chosen sides for the 777 and
A350XWB at the high end of the twinengine widebody  segment.
The Paris Air Show confirmed the
continuing optimism in our industry, and
most of the OEMs had plenty of orders to
celebrate. In the regional jet market, it
is becoming very clear that the going is
getting tougher and neither Mitsubishi,
Bombardier nor Superjet had much to
celebrate in terms of new orders, making
Embraer’s sales success probably a little
harder to swallow. The 2014 Farnborough
International Airshow may see different
winners and losers. By that time, the
CSeries will probably be in the air. Will
Bombardier have a Chinese card trick up
its sleeve? Who knows? Let’s hope that
we all will be able to enjoy another air
show in good health and good spirits
from the terrace of the ISTAT Chalet at
Farnborough 2014.
