Kicking off its presence at this year’s Paris
Air Show, Boeing rolled out its latest version of its long-running and well-respected
annual forecast, predicting the future of
global air travel and the airline industry’s
response over the next 20 years.
Boeing’s 2013 Current Market Outlook
(CMO) foresees a demand for more than
35,000 new jetliners between now and
2032, valued at $4.8 trillion.
This year’s forecast represents a slight
increase from 2012 levels and maintains
the view that the world’s fleet will double
over the next two decades, driven over that
time by expected 5 percent annual growth
in both passenger and freight traffic.
“There are no strong changes in this
year’s CMO, just minor adjustments,” said
Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes and the
company’s primary CMO spokesman. “Our
forecast is up about 3.8 percent in terms of
units and 7 percent in terms of value over
2012. It’s the result of some escalation and
modest up-gauging among model types.”

Single-Aisle Strength
According to Tinseth, the single-market
is the main driver of the forecast and
continues to show strength.
“We see a need for close to 25,000 new
airplanes in the market we serve with the
Next Generation 737 and the forthcoming
737MAX. That’s up 6 percent over last year
32 The official publication of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading

and the result of growth of low-cost carriers
and operators in the emerging countries,”
Tinseth said.
The forecast also sees continuing need
for new widebodies, such as Boeing’s 747-8,
777 and its 787 Dreamliner.
“Nearly 8,600 airplanes will be needed
in this segment, which is essentially stable
when compared to last year, as airlines
look to replace older planes in their fleets
with new, more fuel-efficient models,”
said Tinseth.
“Overall, this forecast gives us confidence as we increase production rates and
invest in new products like the 777 and
787-10,” he added.

Efficiency Emphasis
In describing the airline mood underlying this year’s outlook, the long-time
Boeing engineer and market analyst said
it’s all about customer initiative.
“Our customers are really focused on
efficiency and managing their businesses
aggressively in a number of ways,” said
Tinseth. “They’re relooking at their operations—their flight and fuel policies, maintenance procedures and more to find any
way to become more efficient.”
Tinseth said the current emphasis goes
far beyond that of managing through continued fuel price volatility.
“It’s not just about fuel, but labor costs.
They’re asking ‘how do we reduce or change
