Modern recruiting methods won't displace the
human factor in hiring, but can be an ally. How
are retailers and recruiting firms seizing opportunities to identify and select talent in the digital
age? And how are newer approaches supporting
more effective hiring decisions?
Keep it simple

Start with a retailer's website, which can be a
great recruitment vehicle. "The best retailers
want to hire their customers," says Jane Stollar, Client Relations Manager at Integral Retail.
"They're already passionate about your brand. So
give a sense of your company culture, and what
people get out of working there."
Don't make it difficult to find the ca- "THE BEST RETAILERS

says. "People don't want to have to

go to 10-15 sites to find out all the opportunities."
Mobile phones are reshaping, too, how retailers
should position job opportunities. Size matters.
Assume that job postings-as well as other information on the workplace-are often viewed on a
tiny screen.
"You need to get your key message across
quickly on those types of devices," says Cameron Laker, CEO of Mindfield
Group, a B.C.-based recruiting firm.
To be effective, be brief. That means replacing lengthy job descriptions
with a succinct flavour of the company. It's important to emphasize the corporate culture fit-this is what you're all about as a retailer, and this is the
type of person you're looking for.
A peek inside

Technology has made it much easier for employers and job seekers to find
out about each other. "Candidates will check everything out online. We see
that as employer branding opportunities," says Davis.
Any digital footprint is a chance to reinforce that brand. For Davis, one
measure of cultural health is staff activity on social media. When employees post about the company, it creates a buzz for Town Shoes as a retailer
and an employer. "That's important," says Davis.
Recruitment advertising is specific to a need today. Employer branding
is ongoing. On Twitter and Facebook, H&M highlights interesting things
happening at the retailer and about the people serving customers. The company also produced a promotional video series of store managers talking
about their best moments at H&M.
