WALMART OPENS FIRST ATLANTIC CANADA SUPERCENTRE

Walmart Canada CEO Shelley Broader was on hand on Friday, July
26, 2013 to help usher in the very first Walmart supercentre in Atlantic Canada—Halifax to be precise. The move signifies the company’s
aggressive bid to win over customers in an increasingly competitive
retail market.
The massive, 13,500-square-metre store is one of nine supercentres
planned for the region and one of 37 projects that will involve expansion,
remodelling or relocating existing stores across the country at a cost
of $450 million. Walmart will spend about $90 million on the Atlantic
expansion in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, adding 300 positions.
The Halifax project, which the company said created 30 new jobs, means
Walmart now has 217 supercentres in Canada and 380 stores in total.
The supercentre adds fresh food to the department store’s offerings
and represents what can only be called a grocery stand-off Down East.
Loblaw Companies Ltd. said Wednesday, despite news of Walmart’s Atlanitc Canada plans, it anticipates strong growth for the rest of the year.
Target also plans to enter the fray, launching approximately 70 new
stores in the country before the end of the year, some of which in Atlantic Canada.
In addition, the market share in the grocery sector is shared by
Metro Inc. Empire Company’s Sobeys stores.
CANADIAN FASHION RETAILER EXPANDING IN U.S. AND
INTERNATIONAL MARKETS

The hugely popular Canadian fashion brand Groupe Dynamite announced in late Spring that it has plans to expand its operations to fans
in the U.S. and other international markets.
The company, who carry the banners Garage and Dynamite, have
been buoyed by the success of Garage, which it launched in the U.S. in
2007, and have now opened its very first Dynamite location outside of
Canada in New York City.
The store opened on Friday, May 17 and is set to open three more
Dynamite stores and three international locations later this year. Over
the next five years, Dynamite is expected to see approximately 60 new
stores open. In addition, Garage, which currently has 33 American
retail locations, will open three more in the U.S. and six more internationally by the end of this year.
“We are very pleased to be opening our doors to our neighbours
south of the Canadian border,” said Groupe Dynamite president, Anna
Martini. “Dynamite has been warmly received in this new market and
is quickly becoming a hot name on the street—this is exciting, as we've
already seen such amazing growth and success with Garage!”
To support its expansion, Groupe Dynamite has largely focused
on social media, by providing fans and followers with relevant and
original content in both Canada and the U.S. through top social media
channels—Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest.
Martini said that the move further enhances and supports the
company’s already impressive omnichannel presence. With steadily
growing e-commerce sales, successful mobile apps and an interactive
website that generates lots of traffic, marketing to its customers where
they’re interacting and communicating with brands and each other
was an easy decision.
