of blue jeans is 34/32 or 32/32? And if a customer
in the store is 34/32, and can't find those jeans,
you've lost that sale. Inventory management is
extremely manual, and that's where RFID helps."
Simply put, the process involves tagging individual items with tiny, passive (read: without batteries) radio transmitters capable of encoding a
small amount of product information through the
use of MIT's Electronic Product Code (essentially
a more complex barcode). And using positioned
scanners that emit electromagnetic radiation,

fed into an online database. Crucially, Auto-ID
tech (the name given to the commercial version
of RFID technology) utilizes open standards for
readers and tags-allowing those same tags to be
read by anyone along the supply chain.
"If you can capture data rapidly, and increase
its accuracy, you have a whole bunch of information you're able to build into your supply chain,"
Smith explains. "You can forecast when you need
more inventory. You can reduce the amount of
inventory you need around, and be a lot more efficient, simply because you can scan, in real-time,
and get information on the status of virtually
everything in your inventory. Right now, we're
doing all of that manually. It's crazy, in terms of
what the opportunities are."
