ECCO: THE 2020 PLAN
Danish leather goods brand has big plans for Canada

CURRENTLY, ECCO operates 31 stores in Canada
and 1,200 across the globe. Jordan Searle, President of ECCO Shoes Canada, says the company
is underrepresented in the country, but that it has
a healthy wholesale, retail, and e-commerce business, and that demand for the company's product
among Canadians is growing. It's for those reasons that the company plans to expand its Canadian presence to 45 stores by 2020.
The plan may look aggressive in light of how
much more difficult it has become for retailers
to own and operate brick-and-mortar shops in an
environment increasingly biased towards e-commerce. But, as Searle explains, the brand needs to
get itself in front of customers.
"Right now, we feel that we're underrepresented
and we need to ensure that the brand is represented in key places," he says.
Underrepresented but not unknown. ECCO has
some diehard Canadian fans and a huge presence outside of Canada. Earlier this year, the shoe
manufacturer launched the first ECCO flagship
store in North America at Yorkdale in Toronto.
One city that knows ECCO well is Montreal.

The brand has operated a well-trafficked store on
Saint-Catherine Street for years. At present, following a decision by the landlord to renovate the
store's building, ECCO will relocate its Montreal
flagship and update its retail concept. Saint-Catherine's will be the first store to feature what Searle
calls a "halo zone," a special zone within the store
offering exclusive products only available in select ECCO stores across the country. The product
will have a different, premium design that Searle
says will "tell the ECCO story in a slightly different way." The Montreal location will also feature
an ECCO leather goods shop integrated into the
main store. The company experimented with a
similar leather goods shop-in-shop concept in its
Granville store in Vancouver.
Satisfying customer demands
What is it that today's customer wants from the
in-store retail experience?
"That's a million-dollar question and really
every retailer will have that take on it," says Searle.
ECCO's take-one that's inspired the company's
expansion-is value.
