Color performance
An analysis of new directions in make-up

Intuitive color
Make-up that is formulated to change its color upon application has been around for
decades for lips, but more brands are taking this technology into other areas, such
as blush. Estée Lauder-owned Smashbox's O-Glow Intuitive Cheek Color (pictured) is
one example. The silicone-based gel is clear, and takes on color when it comes into
contact with the moisture in skin. Beyond imparting color, the product is said to give
cheeks a glow, and can be used either under or over make-up. Physicians Formula's
pH Matchmaker line of powder-based foundation and blush claims to adapt its color
to the skin through Flourescein-based dye, which adjusts its color to the skin's pH
level in 60 seconds, and Photochromic Powders, described as light-adjusting pigments
that adapt to the surrounding environment, so that the color looks the same indoors
and outdoors.
Pigments galore
More brands are offering lip items that feature a higher pigment content. Strong
color traditionally found in lipstick, is now being formulated for glosses and even lip
liners. Dutch make-up brand Ellis Faas launched its Hot Lips range of lip glosses in
October 2013 in nine shades that are "packed with pigments" (pictured); the formula
is said to be non-drying and longwearing. Niche brand Hourglass also came out with
Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick, a gloss that imparts matte colors, is said to be richly
pigmented and lasts 14 hours on the lips without flaking or drying. Canadian brand
Bite Beauty's High Pigment Matte Pencil is made of a "double dose of micronized
pigments," according to the manufacturer.
Staying put
Professional make-up items are influencing the prestige category, as consumers look
for better performance from products. New items claim to keep make-up from fading
or running and provide longer hold. Urban Decay's All Nighter is a fixing spray that
is said to keep make-up looking "just-applied" for up to 16 hours. The product uses
the brand's Temperature Control Technology, which claims to lower the temperature
of make-up to keep foundation, eyeshadow, blush and concealer in place through all
weather conditions. Make Up For Ever's Mist & Fix (pictured), meanwhile, is described
as a type of sealant that comes in the form of a light mist, and keeps make-up in
place by coating the skin with a weightless and invisible film. n n n
