Interview New scenarios for Cifra Intima Asia met Cesare Citterio, Cifra’s CEO, and discovered the paths of innovation and strategic objectives of a business which has always been projected towards the future. Mr Citterio, could you tell us about your latest product innovations? CESARE CITTERIO We have innovations in three different fields of application. Thanks to the introduction of yarns with a high-technological content specific to the sport sector, in particular Aquafil Dryarn® in the raschel seamless segment, we are today in a position to manufacture garments with the unique moisture control features typical of this yarn, combined with the plus factors of wearability and comfort of seamless warp knitting. In raschel legwear the development of a particular technique in the knit of the yarns (patented, like all the Cifra products) will enable us to create color combinations previously unimaginable: thanks to the use of cationic yarns, for the first time raschel fishnet and jacquard stockings will no longer be available in just one color but can be manufactured in any two colors chosen by our customers. Finally, in the raschel fashion sector, with excellent feedback from customers some months ago we presented our patented CUT technology, which enables us to produce finished garments by cutting a fabric on a doubled fronted loom. The result? Absolutely unique drape and feel, as well as the possibility of producing all-over prints on seamless garments. How do you read the market today? The market has got a lot of slack in it. Domestic demand has been affected by the fall in consumption and the liquidity crisis in families. Abroad it’s being squeezed by unbalanced exchange rates and Asian competition. When external factors change in ways that are not volatile, a strategic breakthrough becomes necessary. For this reason we’ve decided to explore new scenarios by aiming at emerging markets. What is the core of this new strategy? Absolutely! For years we’ve been patenting our technologies and it’s a card we’ve kept up our sleeve till today. But now we’ve begun to play it against unauthorized use of our know-how, which is becoming increasingly common. For this reason, for the first time in Paris the Cifra stand was not open to the pu- The leading objective is to approach the Chinese market by opening a Cifra production branch in Shanghai. Located about forty km from downtown Shanghai, the new site will come equipped with an internal sewing department. The market for its output will initially be China. Then, once the project is well under way, we’ll be able to consider extending more competitive prices to part of our customer base in Europe. If everything goes as planned, we aim to open the branch by the end of 2008.
