15 minutes with… MR Recruitment, Mr. Mike Richards, Managing Director
MR Recruitment is mainly active on the Treasury market. Which trends have you noticed in the last 12 months? As a company MR Recruitment is unique because we are the only recruitment company in the world that solely focuses on the treasury recruitment market globally. This specialist focus has allowed us to really understand how the treasury recruitment market has shifted and reacted to the international crises that have faced us over the past 3 years. We’ve faced a pretty tough time over the past 2 years and have only recently seen significant improvement in the levels of treasury recruitment. The recovery started towards the end of 2010 and thankfully has continued into 2011. However, clients are still being very specific about their requirements when recruiting and due to the lack of fluidity/recent movement in the marketplace we are often able to source candidates that tick every box requested.
It’s worthy of mention that we have seen a significant increase in the number of technology based positions within Treasury functions specifically relating to systems. It seems clients have been under greater pressure to produce “more with less”. They have been expected to produce more results with the same number of staff or in some cases less staff. They have often achieved this through the implementation of Treasury systems that have helped simplify the day to day processes. Clients are also focussed on recruiting treasury professionals who have an international outlook rather than those who have a predominantly domestic skill set. If a young treasurer asks you for advice how to start his career on the right way. What would you tell him? Is there a suitable track? Don’t stay at home and expect the next Treasury opportunity to come knocking at your door!
Treasury by its very nature is focussed upon the global financial markets. If you want to achieve you have to be prepared to work outside of your native / domestic market. We have noticed that the Treasury professionals who have achieved the most have actively sought to experience other cultures and have realised that they needed to experience Treasury in a global multinational environment rather than simply waiting for Treasury experience to come to them where they’re currently working. Those who have achieved the most have done so through a combination of both exemplary decision making during times of crisis and sheer hard work. They have often invested their time in pursuing professional training and qualifications i.e. often they have pursued treasury qualifications or wider qualifications such as an MBA program to broaden their management expertise whilst continuing to perform their demanding roles.
