NEWS MARCH 2007 Modernisation works launched on Brussels-Luxembourg link On March 2, 2007, Belgian rail infrastructure manager Infrabel officially launched modernisation works on the Brussels-Luxembourg rail link. This project has been classed as a priority by both the European Commission and South Belgium region The works – modernising infrastructure, rectifying courbes and improving sidings in stations – will boost speeds of trains on this line and reduce travel times between the two cities. Finmeccanica in deal with Russian Railways Finmeccanica Spa has signed a memorandum of understanding with state-owned JSC Russian Railways to build a high-speed rail link between Moscow and St Petersburg. Italy's state-owned railway operator Ferrovie dello Stato also signed the memorandum. In October 2006, Finmeccanica announced it had signed a partnership agreement with JSC Russian Railways for technical assistance, production and the marketing of rolling-stock and rail infrastructure in Russia. Redevelopment at Part Dieu According to research by SNCF-Grand Lyon-Sytral, the number of users at Part Dieu station (Lyon, France) is set to double from 81,000 to 160,000 passengers per day by 2020. In addition to the growth of TER traffic, this growth will also be driven by the higher powered Lea tramway, the arrival of future Leslys and T4, and the opening of the Perpignan-Figueras and RhineRhone HSLs. To meet these needs, the SNCF-Grand Lyon-Sytral study proposes investing €30 million to redevelop the station. APAJH, Palais des Congrès, Paris APAJH – the Federation for the Young and Aged Handicapped – awards its “APAJH Trophies” to companies and organisations, both public and private, actively involved in promoting insertion of the handicapped. This national prize giving event will take place on March 16, 2007 at the Palais des Congrès, Paris. US&S to provide automatic train control for Thessaloniki Union Switch & Signal Inc. has signed a contract with Ansaldo Trasporti Sistemi Ferroviari Spa to provide Automatic Train Protection, Operation and Supervisory functions and capabilities for Thessaloniki metro. This project will be US&S’ fifth steel wheel, driverless, Automatic Train Control system installed worldwide. Thessaloniki metro will run underground for its entire length of approximately 9.5 km, and will include 13 stations. The system will transport 18,000 passengers per hour in each direction, with trains running every 90 seconds. The work is scheduled for completion and opening in 2012. Also, US&S has signed a contract with Ansaldo Trasporti Sistemi Ferroviari Spa to provide the Automatic Train Control system for Line 5 of Milan metro. Here, US&S will again implement a completely integrated, driverless wayside/vehicle/office ATC system. This will route ten trains through 9 stations, along 5.6 km of track, with a minimum headway of just 75 seconds. The project is scheduled for completion in 2011. Milan Line 5 is the first example of project financing where the successful bidder wins the concession and management of the line - used for urban transport in Italy. Connecting the eastern suburbs of Milan, from Stazione Garibaldi to Via Bignami, the new underground line will be capable of carrying up to 21,000 passengers per hour. Carillion secures £60 million deal in UK Support services and construction company Carillion has signed a five-year framework agreement, worth an estimated £60 million, with UK rail operator Network Rail. Carillion Rail will deliver signalling renewals, including alterations, enhancements, safety improvements, small renewal projects and life-extension schemes in the south-east. This contract forms part of an extensive programme to improve the network in the region. “We are delighted to have been awarded a five-year signalling contract extension, to improve equipment reliability, railway safety and further reduce train delays,” said John McDonough, CEO of Carillion. FEBRUARY 2007 Double French win for Alstom ALSTOM has been awarded two contracts, worth a total of €270 million, to supply EMUs and electric locomotives to operators in France. French National Railways (SNCF) has ordered 39 threecar trains and 12 four-car double-deck Coradia Duplex regional trains for the regions of Nord Pas-de-Calais, Picardy, Rhône-Alpes, and Provence-Côte d’Azur. Under a workshare agreement, Bombardier will participate in manufacturing 63 of the 165 vehicles. Meanwhile, Veolia Cargo has exercised an option for an additional ten Prima, tri-voltage, electric locomotives, following on from an initial order for seven, in 2005, which are currently being delivered. The contract includes an eight-year maintenance agreement, and the locomotives will be delivered between FebruaryOctober 2008. Switzerland invests billions road rail shift Ambitious projects to improve crossing the Alps are currently underway in Switzerland. Soon, dozens of trucks will be travelling through the massive, northsouth barrier of the Alps at one-minute intervals. Switzerland is investing billions of its own funds to improve transport links through the Alps – this will benefit both the country and the European Union as a whole. While the European Union spends years in talks and issuing declarations of intent, Switzerland is on track and putting words into action. The overall aim of the projects is to boost the number of trucks transported by rail. The investment injection will slash the number of trucks currently on the roads from 1.2 million to 650,000. DB selects Bombardier for regional train order German Rail (DB) has chosen Bombardier to supply 321 regional trains worth a total of €1.2 billion. The socalled “framework” contract, one of the biggest in DB’s history, will be signed shortly. The fleet of EMUs, a new-generation variant of Bombardier’s Talent design, will enter into service on regional routes across Germany from 2009. The entire fleet will be manufactured at Bombardier sites in Germany. Marseilles orders ACS ticketing system The French city of Marseilles has awarded a three-year, US$14 million contract to Dallas-based Affiliated Computer Services, Inc. (ACS) for a multi-operator, multi-modal contactless ticketing system. It will serve metro, tram line, trolley, and bus customers. “ACS continues to expand its reputation as a systems integrator and supplier of innovative and complex fare collection systems across the globe,” said Tom Burin, executive vice president and chief operating officer, ACS Government Solutions Group. Valencia wants AVE High-Speed Rail link guarantee A delegation from Valencia in Spain visited Madrid in March to discuss the AVE high-speed rail link with Víctor Morlán, secretary of state for infrastructure. The delegation was headed by José Ramón García Antón, regional head of infrastructure and transport.
