It is so large that it was necessary to devote two joint exhibitions to it!... In Marseille and Aix, two museums - Longchamp and Granet - expose 200 masterpieces painted between 1880 and 1960. Why this title? It is known that Van Gogh, while in Arles, was calling for the creation of an outdoor studio in the South of France. His quarrel with Gauguin stopped him!... What he failed to do, others got down to it, and we see the result, beautifully illustrated, from Van Gogh to Bonnard (at Longchamp) and from Cézanne to Matisse (at Granet). The common thread of the exhibition is chronological and we cross major artistic movements that have marked an era also crucial in the political, scientific, historical plans. Thus we go from Impressionism to Post-Expressionism, crossing Fauvism, Cubism, the Surrealists and Abstraction. Both museums are not one without the other, and our pleasure is doubled by the number of paintings, and by the wondrous discovery of the beauty of the diverse landscapes of the sublime Mediterranean Sea, itself promised to the eternity of civilizations.
