It's on trend... Marine anchors It is THE on-trend pattern this season! Marine anchors are present in scrapbooking departments, ideal to scrap the photos of our holidays by the sea! Here are some ideas for something different. by Mylen Chartier, Ula Kopciewska, Bénédicte Raphalen, Séverine Sorbier and Gaëlle Fauglas Quincunx art... « Bienvenue au paradis (Welcome in Heaven) » by Mylen Chartier In the eighteenth century, it was the golden age not of sea anchors on wallpaper, but the age - in silversmith's work, in cabinet making - when the flat or curved surfaces of furniture disappeared under inlays of precious wood, forming entire panels with geometrical designs. There cubes, lattice or diamond patterns sheltering seedbeds of flowerets in quincunx enliven the surfaces coated with those lattices and still allow ornamentalists to sculpt a rich decoration of spirals, leaves, shells, dragon and chimera heads, masks of goat-like men and grimacing men - all this according to the intended use of each piece of furniture. Curiously, in Metz, the same networked pattern was resumed to carve vivid decorated panels above the one or two-leaf doors that punctuate the city... Same idea of diamonds imprisoning four-petal flowers and spanning the entire width of the decorated panel above the door, which they prepare to receive a flood of ornementations in order to impress the eye and mind of the passer-by... (continued on p.25) A nautical print For a layout with a nautical theme, the "Anchor» pattern is quite appropriate. A real fad, it is now found in several major brands of patterned papers. Whether it is in a repeated pattern, on stickers as on Mylen's layout but also on stamps, 24 HISTOIRES DE PAGES - SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2013 wooden embellishments... we find it everywhere: it is the trendy motif of the moment! The repetition of those marine anchors is a symbolic reminder of our travels, the sea and holidays: we get literally immersed in the theme!
