S pokane Valley's Discovery Playground in Spokane, Washington, celebrated its grand opening in May. The $1.6 million multi-sensory, inclusive playground was designed by Design Concepts to include play activities that enhance physical and social development while teaching about eastern Washington's natural history and environment. Highlights include a wavy walk, balance steps, and rolling hills that mimic local geology. The playground also includes a raised sand table where children can discover fossils, a water feature that shoots jets of water into the air from a splash pad decorated by a colorful steelhead trout, and a climbing wall that leads to an eagle's overlook complete with eggshells large enough for kids to climb in. www.NRPA .ORG SEPTEMBER 2010 Parks & Recreation 9
