C otton Creek Park in Irving, Texas, was the site of a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 24 to dedicate the city's new $2.2 million Accessible Playground and Miracle League Field. City of Irving leaders and the Irving Advisory Committee on Disabili- ties Irving voters approved the funding of a fun, safe environment for special needs children in the 2006 bond election. The field is smaller than most and doesn't have traditional sand or raised bases that would prohibit wheelchairs and crutches from being used. Instead, the bases, infield, and outfield are painted on a smooth rubberized surface so children with special needs will have a place to play baseball and other games. The playground is also built in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and includes access ramps, wider play decks and other design features to accommodate mobility impaired children. The new recreational area will be the official home of the Disabled Softball League. www.NRPA .ORG DECEMBER 2009 Parks & Recreation 9
