Spotlight on the Staff
Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The current focus in this country on climate change adaptation is just that— prevention. When we launched our climate change service line a few years ago, we saw it as an opportunity to help our clients and their stakeholders use powerful analytical tools and models to be more proactive—to identify how hazards and risks could be exacerbated by environmental factors. We knew we could work with organizations to take steps reducing risks to man-made infrastructure and the natural environment. And when avoiding hazards altogether wasn’t an option, we could employ sustainable design techniques, living shorelines, and other alternatives. At Dewberry, we are currently working with the University of Central Florida, the Northwest Florida Water Management District, and other academic institutions on a project for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research evaluating the ecological effects of sea-level rise in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Specifically, the project is examining how rising sea levels could harm estuaries and coastal communities along the Florida Panhandle and Alabama and Mississippi coasts. The project team will use computer modeling and simulation techniques to understand the long-term impacts of rising sea level, which threatens barrier islands, beaches, wetlands and critical habitats for commercially valuable species such as oysters. Moving forward, we will see government agencies putting continued emphasis on “climate resilience.” This holistic approach manages the risks posed by climate change impacts by building adaptive capacity, implementing sustainable energy solutions, and reducing vulnerabilities.
