provide a design-build delivery approach that expedited construction start-up and trimmed six to eight months from the schedule. In a joint-venture with O’Brien & Gere, Dewberry was recently contracted to perform facility energy improvements for the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York. The team will use a modified design-build construction platform to assess energy savings for higher education and various state-owned facilities, detail energy conservation measures, prepare drawings and specifications, and bid the work to prequalified contractors who will become subcontractors to the joint venture. The joint venture will also verify that the energy cost savings were achieved through the facility upgrades. When developer Kettler needed transportation planning and engineering for the privately funded interchange of Route 7 and River Creek Parkway in Loudoun County, Virginia, Dewberry worked quickly to execute the job under a compressed schedule. Following concept approval, Dewberry created roadway and bridge plans and worked closely with Kettler to further the plan reviews while Kettler arranged financing to implement the interchange. Construction was coordinated with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Loudoun
County, and other agencies and utility companies; and Dewberry submitted the necessary documentation for acceptance into the state highway system. Also in Virginia, the new Richmond Airport Connector Road (pictured right) recently opened following a turnkey design-build effort led by Dewberry with American Infrastructure. The 1.6-mile, four-lane toll road, which improves traffic flow between the Pocahontas Parkway and Richmond International Airport, was completed for Transurban, an international toll road developer and operator. The Dewberry/American Infrastructure team completed the project a month ahead of schedule, meeting all VDOT standards and ultimately winning a national merit award from the Design-Build Institute of America. Clearly, breakthrough partnerships and carefully coordinated design-build efforts show promise for agencies and owners looking to move forward with major construction projects. From local initiatives to transformative, multi-phase federal developments, alternative delivery is yielding a steady stream of successful—and instructive—case studies.
