What makes buildings stand the test of time? High-quality materials, timeless design, and close connections to the communities they serve.
In downtown Pontiac, Illinois, a historic courthouse has a new neighbor. The recently dedicated Livingston County Law and Justice Center doubles the size of the county’s previous court facilities with 63,000 square feet of courtrooms, offices, and meeting space. The building has enhanced justice operations with greater efficiency, advanced technology, and an inviting community presence. Like its circa-1875 predecessor, the Law and Justice Center is designed to serve the public for generations. At the dedication, local residents praised the building’s appearance and high-quality details, including the expert craftsmanship of the masonry, millwork, tile, and terrazzo. “This law and justice center, like the historic old courthouse, should stand for well over a century, serving the needs of our children, grandchildren, and more generations to come,” said Bill Flott, chair of the county board’s Law and Justice Center Committee.
Fostering the Public Trust
Thousands of miles away, two additional civic projects also reflect enduring connections between local government and the communities they serve. In Alexandria, Virginia, a new police headquarters provides a welcoming environment for residents with a spacious atrium lobby and public meeting space. Deemed “an iconic building” by Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, the headquarters consolidates police operations and also houses the Department of Emergency Communications. The building’s landmark presence, including an engaging public plaza along with the use of durable materials such as masonry, terrazzo, stone, and wood, signal the city’s ongoing commitment to civic architecture that stands the test of time.
