The LEED®-Gold building pays tribute to Arizona’s architectural heritage with a palette of white stucco and terra cotta tiles, yet supports streamlined police and court operations through its modern form and massing. Two wings house departmental activities while central space welcomes visitors and opens to a light-filled inner courtyard.
Creating Community Appeal
For public libraries, durability, flexibility, and long-lasting community appeal are essential. Two Midwestern libraries reflect a thoughtful and well-planned approach to serving residents, with inspired buildings that are drawing many new customers. The new Fox Lake District Library in Illinois includes a 125-seat meeting room, a café, lively children’s areas, and a quiet reading room housed on the cantilevered second floor. The use of stone and brick reflects the
library’s permanence, while materials such as phenolic panels and glass symbolize the future. According to the Illinois Library Association’s ILA Reporter, “In orientation and form, the new Fox Lake District Library literally welcomes users with open arms, its exterior angles recalling an open book and expressing one of the facility’s main purposes.” In Delaware, Ohio, the Orange Branch Library welcomed 7,000 new customers in its first two months alone. The building is designed as a community gathering place for all ages, with a glass-enclosed study room with a stone fireplace, a meeting room, and vibrant spaces for children and teens. “With its organic feel from the lovely stone and wood features, our library projects a timeless quality that customers appreciate and embrace,” says Delaware County Library District Director Mary Jane Santos. “This branch will remain comfortable, beautiful, and well-used for many years to come.”
The four-story Alexandria Police Headquarters in Virginia, designed in association with HDR, is a “modern, world-class facility,” according to Acting City Manager Bruce Johnson.
