With issues from aging structures to regulatory compliance
to changing fuel costs, energy utilities are facing significant
challenges keeping infrastructure up-to-date and in line
with customer demand. For the utility company Dominion,
maintaining service in one of the more populated areas of the
country means, among other things, keeping up with data
center expansions and the growing number of electronically
powered devices that require constant connectivity.
Running from Mt. Storm substation in West Virginia
to the Doubs substation in Maryland, Dominion’s
number 551 transmission line crosses over 100 miles of
mountainous terrain and steep elevations (pictured left).
Part of Dominion’s original 500,000 volt transmission
line—the first 500 kV line energized in the U.S.—the line
runs west to east and serves significant portions of the
mid-Atlantic population.
Until recently, line 551 was heavily loaded and the
structures, wires, insulators, and other equipment on the
45-year-old line were nearing the end of their useful life.
Dominion targeted the line for reconstruction. “We knew
we had to get in front of any problems on this line,” says
Bob McGuire, director of electric transmission projects
for Dominion Virginia Power. “In building the Meadow
Brook to Loudoun 500kV line, we knew that investment
would put us in the right position to manage outages
and refurbish Mt. Storm to Doubs.” The refurbished line
would also increase capacity by 66 percent and improve
electromagnetic field (EMF) and noise performance.
After securing regulatory approvals in Virginia,
Maryland, and West Virginia, Dominion initiated its
aggressive schedule to rebuild and refurbish the line, with
the goal of completing the rebuild of all 475 structures
by the winter of 2014/2015. An important first step was
setting the survey points so initial construction could
