Improving Power and
Utility Infrastructure
Upgrading campus systems for expansion,
efficiency, and resilience
The High Point Regional Health facility in High Point,
North Carolina, was in need of major expansions
and renovations, but when Dewberry performed a
campus-wide facilities assessment, it was determined
that renovations weren't possible without a complete
overhaul of the 30-year-old power and utility
infrastructure. The assessment focused on energy
conservation, resilience, and expansion suggestions,
while identifying necessary upgrades to chilled water,
emergency power generation, and power distribution
infrastructure. Dewberry also completed preliminary
conceptual designs with cost estimates. The results of
the assessment led to High Point Regional Health's
two-year, phased infrastructure improvement plan.
Introducing a New Utility Infrastructure
The new systems include three new 2,500 kilowatt
volt amps (kVA) emergency generators, consolidation
of multiple electrical services into a 12.5 kilowatt
volt (kV) campus distribution system, and three new
1,500-ton high-efficiency chillers with 4,500-tons of
total cooling capacity.

Successfully Overcoming Challenges
The infrastructure improvement plan also addressed
how to keep the medical center fully functional and
serving patients while the new systems were installed.
Additionally, there were three City of High Point
electrical transformers located on the medical campus
that provided power to the city's energy plant that had
to be relocated when installing the new systems without
causing any long-term shutdowns.
The Dewberry team concluded that constructing a
building on campus to house the emergency generators
and switchgear would aid the smooth installation and
collaborated with the contractors to develop a multi-phase
construction strategy and field logistics plan. The hospital
and city utilities staff coordinated to diligently plan each
power transfer, and all 55 of the scheduled major electrical
shutdown/transfer operations were accomplished without
any issues, injuries, or damages.
The project was recognized by the Carolinas
Associated General Contractors (CAGC) with a Pinnacle
Award for Best Project over $5 Million, and Dewberry
received a CAGC Partners in Excellence Award.
