For more than 20 years, Dewberry has
partnered with Luther Jackson Middle
School in Falls Church, Virginia, as part
of the Expanding Visions program.
Volunteers give classroom presentations,
tutor students after school, and participate
in STEM events. Gathering in the library,
Dewberry staff share how they support
education in their own communities.

When I was in second grade, I
learned about climate change
from the pages of a weekly reader.
The science was fascinating and as
the heavy toll on society became
increasingly apparent, these
issues came to define my career
path. Many years later, and with a
second grade daughter of my own,
I am an engineer and certified
floodplain manager. My experience
has taught me the importance of
teaching students technical, but
approachable, scientific concepts so
they can understand what's going
on in the world around them. That's
why I teach an introduction to
climate change course at the local
elementary school.

Developing the next crop of engineers takes time and energy, not just from
professors and students, but from professionals as well. For the last three
years, I've volunteered with the North Carolina State University student
chapter of the North Carolina American Water Works Association and
Water Environment Association-called "NC Safewater" for short-a student
organization of which I was founding president. As an alum, I now bring
new speakers to organization events and serve as a judge to select teams that
go on to compete in the national Water Environment Federation Technical
Exhibition and Conference Student Design Competition.
