Tulsa Adds Route 66 Gateways
New Structures Arch over the Historic "Mother Road"
The City of Tulsa, Oklahoma, has completed construction of new gateway structures designed to greet travelers as they enter
and depart along historic Route 66. Designed by Dewberry, the structures are the most recent of several improvements that
highlight Tulsa's connection to the legendary corridor.

The design of the monumental structures was inspired by
main center column that rises 38 feet in height. A smaller

arms recall the Streamline Moderne style reminiscent of
the classic automobile styling of the 1950s and 60s.
Three aluminum-clad steel columns, designed in the
era's Zigzag Moderne style, anchor the arms, which are also

gateway element is set across the roadway to symbolically
complete the arch. The gateways are located at the east and
west terminals of Route 66 along the city's edges.
According to Dennis Whitaker, the city's planner
for the Route 66 projects, "The design of the gateways
combines elements of architectural significance from the
Art Deco era, creating a noble iconic feature for heritage
tourism in Tulsa."
