as well as a Lockheed Martin F-35
Lightning II. Other fighters included a
German Eurofighter Typhoon, several
French Dassault Rafales and Mirages,
as well as the exotic PAC Kamra JF17 Thunder. Turkey's answer to the
Lockheed Martin F-35 came in the form
of a mock-up of a new local design,
the "Turkish Fighter TF." Dassault
showed an even more futuristic stealth
fighter design in the form of a full-scale mock-up. Boeing had a mock-up of the T-X
advanced trainer on display in their pavilion.
To be honest, the actual flying display was slightly disappointing during the trade
days - apart from a "private" French air show for Emmanuel Macron, Le Président
de la République himself, on Monday morning, which included a fly-by from the
French display team "Patrouille de France." The daily program was limited to the
Boeing 787-9, A33-900neo, A350-1000 and Embraer E195-E2 on the commercial
side. The 787-9 pilot deserves the price for best commercial flight display, as
he allowed for some top shots of the plane, while other pilots only showed the
aircraft's belly at the point closest to the spectators. The organizers of the air show
deserve some criticism, as once more they had the brilliant idea of allowing a good
dozen of trucks and vans to be parked right in front of the already crowded official
photographers' enclosure, preventing the press from taking good landing shots of
many of the aircraft. The ISTAT Chalet's terrace, in many ways, offered a better view
of the active runway.
The highlight of the flying display was the Beriev Be-200ES multipurpose
amphibious jet - an odd-looking Russian design intended, among others, as an
aerial fire fighter. During the display flight, the Beriev dumped 12,000 liters (3,170
U.S. gallons) on the Le Bourget airport. The French Dassault Rafale, Pakistan JF-17
Thunderbolt as well as an antique
Fouga Magister demonstrated the
difference in fighter jet agility among
the three generations of fighter jet
technology. A few general-aviation class
airplanes, corporate jets, helicopters
and the Embraer KC-390 airlifter
completed the daily flight program.
Without any doubt, dozens of
large and small innovations must have
been presented in the exhibition halls
around the airfield. Unfortunately, we
lack the expertise to identify any new
widgets relevant for the commercial
aircraft trading community. However,
the exhibits from the Russian and
Chinese aerospace industries probably
are - or will become - relevant to
many ISTAT members. The Chinese
