fuel consumption and emissions.
Furthermore, United recognizes the
potential of alternative propulsion
technologies, particularly for short-haul
mainline and regional flights. The airline
envisions the use of battery electric
or hydrogen propulsion systems for
shorter flights, further reducing reliance
on conventional jet fuel.
The remaining approximately 55%
targeted emissions reduction by 2050
is planned to come from sustainable
aviation fuel (SAF). To support the
development and adoption of SAF,
United has established the United
Sustainable Flight Fund and United
Airlines Ventures, through which it
invests in technologies aligned with its
sustainability roadmap. Additionally,
United has launched the Eco-Skies
Alliance, a pioneering program that
promotes collaboration with United in
advancing sustainable aviation fuel.
New Technologies &
Their Impact
The first panel was moderated by
Michael Leskinen, president of UA
Ventures at United Airlines. He was
joined by Oliver Fetzer, CEO of Viridos;
Tom Muniz, chief operating officer of
Archer; Nate Millecam, president and
CEO of Electric Power Systems; Simon
Newitt, chief commercial officer of
Heart Aerospace; and Andre Stein, coCEO
of Eve Air Mobility.
The panelists discussed various
technologies to decarbonize aviation.
Muniz explained how Archer, for
example, is making progress toward

The next panel focused on the
various aspects and challenges of
sustainable aviation investments.
André Keller, director at PwC, served
as moderator for panelists Karine
Guenan, vice president for ZEROe H2
Ecosystem at Airbus; Philippe Karam,
director of global fleet and aviation
sourcing at Amazon Air; Sheila Remes,
vice president of environmental
sustainability at Boeing; Emily Wilson,
director at AB CarVal; and Katya
Akulinicheva, chief financial officer
at ZeroAvia.
Keller set the stage for the
discussion by stating that sustainable
aviation requires demand security for
both OEMs and startups to stimulate
investment, for example, in the form of
offtake agreements. He then identified
three key areas of investment:
infrastructure, technology innovation,
and new platforms and products.
Keller emphasized the importance
of developing new key performance
indicators (KPIs) that measure not
only financial returns but also the
contribution to CO2 reduction. He
also highlighted the necessity for
global harmonization of regulations to
