There are a total of 4,279 passenger configured
A320ceo aircraft either active, parked orĀ in storage,
while around another 10% have already been removed
from service.
n terms of background, little can
be said about the long history
of the A320ceo that hasn't
already been said. As such,
in the limited space available,
this brief overview will focus
solely on the current and future
prospects of this industry workhorse.
Looking at the entire A320 family
built and on order (including the neo),
Airbus can finally claim to have built the
most successful commercial aircraft
family in history, the foundation of
which can be attributed to the success
of the A320ceo. To the untrained eye,
the design appears to have progressed
very little over the past 32 years. To
IBA, however, the final aircraft due
off the production line in the coming
months are a far cry from those initially
produced. Over the years, Airbus and
its partners have upgraded pretty much
44
everything that could be upgraded to
improve operating economics and range
such that there was little option but to
move to an all-new design or replace
the engines in order to achieve the next
level (A320neo). Undoubtedly, there
will be further opportunities to upgrade
the A320ceo, but these will likely align
the aircraft with new regularity and
infrastructure standards and refine
operating economics.
As of 2 December 2019, Airbus had
taken net orders for 4,770 A320ceo

aircraft and delivered 4,748 (including
five corporate jets), a far cry from the
400 needed to break even back in the
1980s. Given the switch over to the neo
program, there are now only 22 left to
deliver, which should complete in 2020.
Across the A320ceo family, there have
been a total of 8,135 net orders with a
backlog of only 76 left.
Naturally, with such a large fleet
operating for over 30 years, the
A320ceo has built up a significant client
base, from both airlines and lessors,
