T

he 737-900ER is a
stretched version of
Boeing's 737-800.
It was developed
in response to the
poorly received
737-900, which saw
only 52 deliveries, primarily due to its
inability to fly coast to coast in the U.S.
First delivery of the 737-900ER was in
2006, with the last occurring in 2019.
It is highly concentrated by operator
and geography, with over 75% of the
delivered fleet of 448 aircraft placed
with just three U.S. carriers: United
(136), Delta (129) and Alaska (75). 737-

The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted 737900ER utilization, resulting in 30% of the delivered fleet
being placed into storage as of 1 December 2020.
900ER deliveries pale in comparison to
the almost 5,000 737-800s placed with
operators, and the 737-700 at nearly
1,100. (Fleet totals source: Air Finance
Journal Fleet Tracker)
The primary competitor to the
737-900ER during its production run
was the Airbus A321-200. In typical
two-class configuration, the A321-200

seats 185 versus 173 for the 737900ER. For 2015 vintages and later,
the A321-200 may seat up to 230 in
single-class configuration, and for 2018
and beyond, up to 240, with the latter
capacity upgrade requiring exit door
modifications. The A321-200 has been
far more successful with over 1,600
delivered. The 737-800 also competes
