that Rolls-Royce said the company
has pledged to make all its engines
100% SAF compatible by 2023 and
also recently announced small nuclear
reactors to provide clean power. He also
noted that Rolls-Royce is trying to break
the speed record for electric aircraft.
Finklestein said ESG plays a big
role at Pratt & Whitney. " We lead with
the GTF engine. We've saved 6 million
tons of CO2
since the start of the
program. We are committed to helping
the industry achieve net-zero carbon
emissions by 2050. We are committed
to 100% SAF. From a corporate
perspective, Raytheon Technologies has
reduced greenhouse gas emissions by
18% since 2015, and we set a new goal
for 2025. For 2021, 10% of executive
compensation is tied to people and
culture, and another 10% is tied to
safety and sustainability, " he said.
On the topic of sustainable aviation
fuel, Lodge said it's attractive because
it can be addressed by current products
today. However, " the challenge is
feedstocks and distribution. It can be
achieved, but it will come at a cost. "

next 20 years. Chambard said maybe;
Finklestein said no; and Lodge said " If
hydrogen transpires, that would need a
bigger engine, and it would fit well into
the A380-size planes. If I were to look
20-plus years ahead, that would make
a larger airplane work. Without the
hydrogen solution, it's a no. "
The Regional Aircraft Panel
was next and was moderated by
Rod Sheridan, chairman of Nordic
Aviation Capital A/S, and focused on
the evolution of the market. Sitting
on the panel was Joseph Allman,
chief financial officer and senior
vice president of finance at Republic
Airways; James Goddard, senior vice
president of fleet planning, acquisitions
and tech operations at Cape Air;
Bruce Peddle, chief operating officer
at Chorus Aviation Capital; and Joel
Raymond, executive vice president and
chief operating officer at CommutAir.
When asked what is keeping him
up at night, Allman said workforce
development is the biggest challenge
Republic is seeing at the moment.
" Fostering and developing new pilots
is a lengthy process, and it only takes
them a day to leave. The pilot shortage
is real. We're losing around 80 pilots a
month right now, " he said. He also noted
that if it weren't for the pilot shortage,
Republic would be operating at a level
higher than pre-pandemic. Goddard
and Raymond are also kept awake at
night by workforce development issues,
specifically the ability to attract and
retain good talent.
The panel also discussed sustainable
aviation fuel, with Peddle saying any
new technology that's developed " will
all evolve through scale, firstly through
regional aviation. We'll play a big part,
but that's more long term. SAFs will be
the first focus, later scaling technology
to larger aircraft. But there's a big gap
between now and then. "
